Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Standards for Contraceptives.

134.

asked the Minister for Health the proposals, if any, he has to control the importation of sub-standard condoms from non-European countries; and if he proposes to introduce legislation for an Irish standard for these products.

The question of standards for imported condoms has been under consideration within my Department for some time. I have decided to make it a condition of licences issued under the family planning legislation, with regard to the importation of contraceptives, that any condoms imported must have been tested to and must conform with an official national standard of a member state of the European Community. It is not felt therefore that any useful purposes would be served by establishing an Irish standard for condoms.
