Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Midland Board Staff.

135.

asked the Minister for Health the number of administrative staff on the health board payroll; and the percentage of these staff who were made redundant since the cutbacks began.

In accordance with the Programme for National Recovery there is no compulsory redundancy affecting permanent health service staff at present.

A total of 11 staff in clerical-administrative grades have expressed an interest in availing of the public service early retirement-voluntary redundancy scheme.

On the matter of the overall level of clerical-administrative staffing the position is staffing was reduced from 284.38 w.t.e. (whole time equivalents) on 31 March 1987 to 268.59 w.t.e. on 31 December 1987, the percentage reduction being 5.5 per cent.

This reduction was achieved through a range of measures including career breaks, job sharing, non-renewal of temporary contracts and natural wastage rather than compulsory redundancy.

asked the Minister for Health the number of nurses and ancillary nurses who were made redundant in each hospital in the Midland Health Board area.

In accordance with the Programme for National Recovery there is no compulsory redundancy affecting permanent health service staff at present.

Under the terms of the public service early retirement-voluntary redundancy scheme the following nursing staff have to date opted to retire early:

St. Fintan's Hospital, Portlaoise

1 Tutor.

1 Nursing Officer.

1 Deputy Nursing Officer.

2 Assistant Chief Nursing Officers.

St. Loman's Hospital, Mullingar

1 Assistant Chief Nursing Officer.

2 Nursing Officers.

General Hospital, Tullamore

1 Ward Sister.

With regard to other nursing staff employed on a temporary basis, the position is that such staff by and large are employed on formal contracts with termination dates or conditions agreed with the employer before a contract is entered into. While nursing staff providing cover on a temporary basis may not have had their contracts renewed, it is not unusual that they would subsequently form part of a panel of nurses who may be required to provide relief services to the health board on an intermittent basis.
