Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Alcohol-Related Deaths.

144.

asked the Minister for Health the number of alcohol related deaths in Ireland for (a) 1980 (b) 1985 and (c) 1987.

It is not possible to determine accurately the numbers of deaths either directly or indirectly attributable to the use or misuse of alcohol. A number of causes of death are regarded as alcohol-related, principally chronic liver disease and cirrhosis of the liver. The number of deaths due to these conditions were 132 in 1980 and 90 in 1985. The most recent available figure is provisional and refers to 1986 in which 99 deaths were registered as due to these conditions. Alcohol abuse may also be a contributory factor in deaths registered as due to other causes.
