Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Cork Pre-School for Travelling Children.

164.

asked the Minister for Education if she will provide sufficient funds to allow the Cork Committee for Travelling Children to keep the pre-school at the Glenties flats complex in Blackpool, Cork, open, having regard to the fact that this pre-school has thirteen children on its roll and will close in June, 1988, if the Committee fails to find an additional £1,000 per annum.

Pre-schools for travelling children are organised by local voluntary committees. My Department provides substantial grant-aid (98 per cent) to formally recognised pre-schools for travellers, to assist towards the cost of part-time tuition and transport for travelling children attending such pre-schools. An equipment grant has been made available annually since 1984.

Blackpool pre-school is in receipt of maximum grant-aid towards running costs. My Department has no authority to make additional funds available.
