Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Conference Centres.

25.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the number of conference centres around the country suitable for large, medium and small conferences; the number that provide audio and audio-visual facilities; the number equipped with modern technology facilities such as computers; and if he has satisfied himself that Ireland can compete with international standards in this area.

Responsibility for the promotion and servicing of convention business in Ireland is not a matter for my Department but for the Convention Bureau of Ireland. The bureau state that they currently list 78 premises of various types around the country as suitable for international meetings. These premises range from purpose-designed conference centres through to multi-purpose venues, to academic institutions and hotels.

The breakdown of the size of these conference centres is as follows: 800 seats and above, 12 premises; 250 to 800 seats, 47 premises; 80 to 250 seats, 19 premises. Most conference premises provide some basic audio and audio-visual equipment. More sophisticated conference technology equipment, such as simultaneous interpretation, is readily available from competent contractors in Ireland. This equipment is easily transported and set up for temporary installations.

While most international meetings do not require the use of computers by their delegates, computers are available for such purposes as interactive audience response systems. Likewise services such as video conferencing can be provided at most conference facilities on request.

I am satisfied that Ireland as a conference destination is competitive in the international market and that with increasing awareness and investment in development of conference facilities this element of the tourism product will continue to maintain its position.

Any further information on conference business into Ireland which the Deputy may require is readily available from the bureau at their office at Baggot Street Bridge, Dublin 2.
