Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Servicing of USSR Aircraft.

28.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a previous Fianna Fáil Government agreed to service US airforce aircraft in Ireland (details supplied) and if any similar consideration has recently been given to servicing USSR aircraft as part of any commercial deal entered into by the present Government and the Government of the USSR.

I am aware of the Government decision in 1952 to which the Deputy is referring. I understand, however, that no servicing of US military aircraft has been carried out in Ireland for a considerable number of years. There are no proposals for similar servicing or maintenance of Soviet military aircraft in Ireland. However, under an agreement between Aer Rianta and Aeroflot, refuelling and catering services are provided at Shannon for aircraft of the Aeroflot fleet operating services between the USSR and Ireland and onwards to other destinations. Approximately 1,200 movements a year are involved.

In addition agreement has recently been reached for the painting of Aeroflot aircraft at Shannon. It is expected that from September 1988 up to 40 Aeroflot aircraft per year will be repainted and refurbished in a specialised hangar to be constructed for the purpose.

Furthermore, under a recent agreement between Aer Lingus and Aeroflot a number of possibilities are being examined for the provision of airline related services by Aer Lingus to Aeroflot, including possible maintenance of commercial aircraft and components.
