Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Spike Island (Cork) Prison.

64.

asked the Minister for Justice the plans he has for the future of Spike Island, County Cork; if it is proposed to maintain Spike Island as a prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans at the moment to make any change in the present use of Spike Island. Fort Mitchel on Spike Island is currently used as a place of detention for male offenders of 17 years and over. When some renovation work is completed in the autumn the fort will have accommodation for approximately 100 offenders.
