Vol. 380 No. 10

Written Answers. - Visitors Visa.

63.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason a citizen of India (details supplied) was denied a visitor's visa to this State having regard to the fact that the person had lived in Ireland for six years; the undertaking or requirements his Department is seeking from this individual in order to grant him a visitor's visa; if he will confirm that he has a separate application for a residence visa; when a decision will be made in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In February 1988 the person referred to in the question applied for an entry visa to visit the State. He had not resided in the State previously but had been a student in Northern Ireland for six years. However, he had been refused permission to remain in the United Kingdom. His application was refused as my Department were not satisfied, on the basis of the information available, that he intended to genuinely visit the State. My Department are not seeking any undertaking from the person concerned in relation to an entry visa for the State.

I can confirm that a separate application for permission to reside in the State has been received from the person concerned. I hope to be in a position to decide on the application shortly.
