Vol. 381 No. 5

Written Answers. - Waterford Roadworks.

75.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received an application from Waterford County Council seeking an allocation of £10,000 to have the road leading to Waterford airport surveyed and design work carried out; and if so, if the request will be sanctioned.

In February 1988, Waterford County Council sought road grant assistance to survey the route between Waterford city and Waterford airport, to prepare design documents, and to fund realignment and improvement of the road.

As the road in question is a county road and an urban road, Waterford County Council were informed that the cost of any improvement works would, in accordance with normal practice, fall to be financed by the local authorities concerned from their own resources. The local authorities may, at their discretion, use the block grants for roads paid annually by my Department to supplement any expenditure from their own resources on such roads.

A further request seeking a special allocation of £20,000 to cover the cost of aerial survey and design work was received in the Department on 30 May. However, the provisions available for road grants during 1988 have been fully allocated and there are no other sources of finance available from which additional grants could now be made.
