asked the Minister for Health if he will provide data to show the number of the following procedures that have been carried out in Ireland in each of the years ended February 1987 and 1988: (a) artificial pacemakers (i) temporary and (ii) permanent (b) heart valve replacements (i) aortic incompetence — prosthesis (ii) mitral incompetence — prosthesis (iii) mitral and aortic incompetence — prosthesis (iv) tricuspid valve and (v) ventricular septal defect (c) kidney transplants (d) hip replacement (i) arthroplasty hip — prosthesis and (ii) revision arthroplasty (e) hospital based haemodialysis (i) use of artificial kidney (ii) chronic haemodialysis, 1st-12th treatment, 12th treatment onwards (iii) acute intermittent dialysis 1st-12th treatment, 12th treatment onwards (iv) peritoneal dialysis and (v) chronic peritoneal dialysis and (vi) EST therapy, 1st-12th day, after 12th day and (f) home based haemodialysis (i) self-dialysis training (ii) after completion training sessions and (iii) chronic peritoneal dialysis.

I regret that the information required by the Deputy is not available in my Department. To obtain such information, because of the large number of locations involved, would require quite a considerable level of resources and I do not consider that this would be justified in the circumstances.

If however, there are any specific items which the Deputy requires urgently, I will see what can be done.
