Vol. 381 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fisheries Inspectors' Role.

31.

asked the Minister for the Marine the role he envisages for the fisheries inspectors in the control of pollution of rivers and streams.

I have no direct function in the role of fisheries inspectors. They are employed by the regional fisheries boards who are statutorily independent.

However, I have asked the regional fisheries boards to make all efforts possible within their resources to combat the threat to fish life due to pollution. The boards prosecute whenever they feel they have sufficient evidence to sustain legal proceedings and legal action is being considered in appropriate cases. Over 200 cases were successfully prosecuted by the boards over the past three years.
