Vol. 381 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sea Fishing Employees.

33.

asked the Minister for the Marine the number of people who are employed (a) in sea fishing and (b) in onshore jobs relating to sea fishing.

It is estimated that at present a total of 7,750 personnel, comprising 3,800 full time and 3,950 part time fishermen, is employed on board Irish sea fishing vessels.

With regard to onshore employment, the most recent CSO statistics compiled in 1985 show that 1,455 persons were engaged in the fish processing sector in September of that year. Latest indications suggest that employment in the sector had risen to approximately 2,500 by September 1987.

In addition, an estimated 1,370 people are involved in the provision of ancillary onshore services to the fishing industry.
