asked the Minister for the Environment the names and functions of the commissions, committees and State-sponsored bodies abolished by him during his term of office to date; and the names and functions of the commissions, committees and State-sponsored bodies set up by him or proposed to be set up by him since taking office.

A. The following bodies have been set up by me during my term of office to date:

Functions

1. The Environmental Research Unit

To provide research, analytical, monitoring, advisory or other services in relation to environmental and infrastructural matters.

2. Construction Industry Development Board

To monitor and assess trends in the con struction industry.

3. Working Party on Building Society Legis-

To consider difficulties in the interpretation and implementation of the Building Societies Regulations, 1987, to advise on desirable amendments to those Regulations and to advise on proposals for inclusion in proposed new legislation governing the operation of building societies.

4. The National Safety Council

To carry out the functions of three former bodies i.e. National Road Safety Association, the Fire Prevention Council and the Irish Water Safety Association.

B. The following bodies were abolished by me during my term of office to date:

Functions

1. An Foras Forbartha

To provide research, testing, advisory, training and information services in matters relating to the physical environment.

2. Dublin Inner City Group

To assist projects in the economic and social fields which made a significant contribution to the rehabilitation of the inner city.

3. Regional Development Organisations

(a) To co-ordinate the development plans pre pared by the Planning Authorities in the Regions.

(b) To advise central Government, and the local authorities concerned of develop ment needs and possibilities in the regions.

(c) To establish and provide, on a regional basis, information relating to physical advantages, public services, industrial needs and development potential.

(d) To promote the economic, social and cul tural well-being of the region as a whole.

4. Environment Awareness Bureau

To foster a greater appreciation of environ mental values and a more caring attitude to the environment at all levels of society.

5. Fire Prevention Council

To promote public awareness of fire safety and measures relating to the prevention of acci dents caused by fire.

6. The Irish Water Safety Association

To promote public awareness of water safety and to provide instruction in water rescue and in resuscitation.

7. The National Road Safety Association

To promote public awareness of road safety and measures relating to the prevention of acci dents on roads.

8. Dublin Metropolitan Streets Commission

To improve environmental conditions, civic amenity and civic design in the Dublin Metro politan Central Area.

C. As regards bodies proposed to be set up by me, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 59 of today concerning the proposed National Roads Authority.
