asked the Minister for Education the names and functions of the commissions, committees and State-sponsored bodies abolished by her during her term of office to date; and the names and functions of the commissions, committees and State-sponsored bodies set up by her or proposed to be set up by her since taking office.

1. At primary level two reviews have been established: (a) the Review Body on the Primary School Curriculum which will analyse the aims and objectives of the present curriculum in primary schools, identify how effectively these are being achieved, examine structures for evaluation and make recommendations for the future; and (b) the Primary Education Review Body which will address the structure of primary education, demographic trends and the staffing of schools, the quality of primary education and organisation.

2. At post primary level on 8 December 1987, the Curriculum and Examinations Board (which was established on an ad hoc basis) was reconstituted as the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment.

3. At third level two committees have been established (a) Interdepartmental Committee on third level education. This committee has been set up to examine and make recommendations on future policies, including the form of funding, for third-level education; (b) Committee on third level courses leading to awards by the National Council for Educational Awards and other bodies outside the Universities. This committee has been set up to examine and make recommendations on all aspects of the above courses.

4. In the sports area a project team for the national sports centre was established in January 1988. The functions of this committee were to select a site for the centre, to identify the sports to be catered for and to recommend financial and planning procedures. The work of the project team was completed in March 1988. Subsequently a National Sports Centre Steering Committee was established to supervise the planning and building of the centre. The first meeting of the committee is scheduled for 15 June 1988.
