asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of allocations to schemes for disadvantaged young people made by her Department from the national lottery or other funds announced recently; the criteria for their allocation; and whether further funds remain to be spent.
Written Answers. - Schemes for Disadvantaged.
Grants totalling £3,763,000 to develop services for the young homeless, young substance abusers and other young people at risk were announced by me on 5 May 1988. A summary of the grants is given below.
Applications for assistance from the special fund of £4 million for disadvantaged youth, established in this Department from the proceeds of the national lottery were considered by an Inter-Departmental Committee on Disadvantaged Youth. This committee was required to draw up a programme of support for disadvantaged young people on the basis of need. Priority was given to projects which heretofore had received no support or to new services provided by existing grant assisted bodies, particularly in the following areas: young homeless, substance abuse, and special youth work services. The committee was also concerned to ensure that a viable level of grant would be provided for projects and that a balance would be achieved among the general areas to be supported.
The balance of some £237,000 has been set aside for the support of further services for disadvantaged youth mainly for young homeless and substance abusers.
The following is a summary of grants allocated to date by county and category.
