Vol. 381 No. 8

Written Answers. - Moneypoint (County Clare) Emission.

32.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the environmental impact of the emission from the Moneypoint power station, County Clare; if he will ensure that a gas scrubbing tower will be fitted at this power station in view of the serious environmental effect that it is having, and the time scale involved.

The planning permission for Moneypoint granted by Clare County Council in 1979 included specific requirements as to emission control and related monitoring, which have so far been met. Monitoring results for the period 1984 to 1987 indicate that emissions are within acceptable levels and are not a cause for concern. The ESB monitoring network has been independently evaluated by An Foras Forbartha. If at any time monitoring results indicate that there may be cause for concern about the environmental impact of emissions from the plant, I will consider what further measures may be necessary to meet the situation.
