Vol. 381 No. 8

Written Answers. - Chair of Irish in Britain.

61.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that financial support is to be withdrawn for the only chair of Irish in Britain, at University College Aberystwyth; that the chair is consequently under threat; if he will make representations to the British Secretary of State for Education; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the risk that the funding of the Chair of Irish Studies at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, may be withdrawn. I understand that this risk arises because of financial cutbacks at the Univeristy leading to the supression of a number of posts.

The availability of Irish studies courses in Britain is important in helping to enhance understanding between our two countries. The loss of the Chair of Irish at Aberystwyth would undoubtedly be a serious setback to plans for promoting Irish studies at university level in Britain. Our concern in the matter is being conveyed to the appropriate authorities.
