Vol. 381 No. 9

Written Answers. - European Cup Finals.

30.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if there have been any consultations with the West German authorities to ensure the safety of the Irish supporters travelling to the European Cup finals, in view of the behaviour of the English supporters at domestic competitions and competitions abroad, especially in Europe over the years and in particular in recent weeks.

The Irish Embassy at Bonn and the Garda authorities have been in contact with those responsible for security and the administration of the football stadia in the three cities where the Irish team will be playing and have discussed the arrangements being made for the safety of the players and spectators. In addition temporary offices will be manned by Embassy personnel in the three cities both during and after the matches.

The Embassy has also met representatives of the Football Association of Ireland who visited these cities and briefed them about these arrangements.

Naturally I hope everybody who is going to Germany will have an enjoyable time and that there are no mishaps. However, if any of our citizens do get into difficulties they should contact directly or ask the police to put them in touch with, an Irish Embassy official when their problems will be addressed.
