Vol. 381 No. 9

Written Answers. - Tallaght (Dublin) Crime Figures.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice the latest crime figures available for Tallaght, Dublin 24, giving a comparison with the trends indicated from the figures of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The levels of recorded indictable crime in the Tallaght area have been falling in recent years. The statistics for the past three years are as follows:

Year

No. of Indictable Offences

1985

2,118

1986

1,913

1987

1,835

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the provisional figure for the first three months of this year is 578, as compared with 407 and 570 for the corresponding period in 1987 and 1986 respectively. They have also informed me that the preliminary indications are that the figures for April and May of this year will show a slight decrease as compared with the same months last year. I should point out, however, that statistics relating to the incidence of crime over short periods of time are only a very limited value as indicators of long-term trends.
