Vol. 382 No. 6

Written Answers. - Marked Diesel.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received representations from a person (details supplied) in County Meath on behalf of legitimate distributors of marked diesel in the Republic, seeking a change in the colour used to mark the diesel in order to differentiate it from diesel used in Northern Ireland as a method of detecting consignments of smuggled marked diesel on sale in this State; if he has taken any action regarding this suggestion; and if not, the reason.

I have received representations from the person in question among others, seeking a change in the colour used to mark diesel for sale as marked gas oil, and the addition of colours and markers to diesel and petrol for use in road vehicles. My Department has been in touch with the trade interests about the proposal and, following these contacts, I have asked the Revenue Commissioners to examine the proposal as a matter of urgency and to let me have their advice.
