asked the Minister for Justice the number of people convicted of stealing cars to date in 1988; and the numbers convicted in 1985, 1986 and 1987.

It is assumed that the question is intended to include all convictions for taking a vehicle without the owner's consent as well as for stealing in the strict legal sense.

The relevant information, which relates to motor vehicles generally, is set out in the following table:

Not yet available — the bulk of convictions are in respect of summary offences which are compiled only on a calendar year basis.
