Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin School Staffing.

247.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the special circumstances of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 6 she will ensure that the school does not lose a teacher for the 1988-89 session as the school had the necessary one additional pupil in early October 1987, though the count of pupils had been taken on 30 September 1987, and also has sufficient numbers at present for the requisite number of teachers for 1989-90 in any event; and having regard to the fact that this is obviously a just case, if she will confirm that the sanctioned number of teachers for 1988-89 will be 16 plus the principal.

The staffing arrangements in the school in question in the current year have been determined in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO, worked out under the auspices of the central review committee for the Programme for National Recovery. The implementation of this agreement is the matter of ongoing consultations between the Department and school interests in relation to developing schools and schools where maximum class sizes are exceeded.

Under these arrangements, the appointment of an additional teacher in the school in question may not be approved at present.
