Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - VEC Redundancies.

47.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of redundancies she has approved in the vocational, community and comprehensive sector in each vocational education committee area; and the criteria she applied in issuing such approvals.

The following vocational education committees have been authorised by my Department to apply the terms of the voluntary redundancy scheme to 39 teachers to date: County Kerry VEC, 4; County Laois VEC, 4; County Leitrim VEC, 1; County Limerick VEC, 7; County Longford VEC, 3; County Mayo VEC, 10; County Roscommon VEC, 3; County Sligo VEC, 3; County Meath VEC, 2; Town of Tralee VEC, 2.

The application of the terms of the voluntary redundancy scheme was authorised only in those committees where the number of permanent whole-time teachers in employment on 1 September 1988 would exceed the normal allocations authorised by my Department for fulltime day courses and only to the extent that the number of teaching posts in excess of the normal allocation could not be managed by other means such as the reduction in the number of temporary whole-time and part-time staff, natural wastage, career breaks, etc. The selection of the individual teachers to be granted voluntary redundancy was left to the relevant vocational education committee.

No redundancies have as yet been authorised in the community and comprehensive sector.
