Vol. 384 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax from Farmers.

20.

asked the Minister for Finance for each of the years 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988, the estimated yield of income tax from farmers, the amount estimated to be paid by farmers in taxation under Schedule E by virtue of part-time earnings, and in real terms, the proportion the present yield of farmers' income tax bears to the total amount paid in income tax and agricultural rates by farmers in the years 1980-1981.

The net receipt of income tax on the farming profits of full-time farmers and of farmers who carry on another trade or profession is estimated at £37 million in 1985, £35 million in 1986, £34.5 million in 1987 and £42 million in 1988.

Tax paid by farmers on income from part-time earnings is collected with Schedule E tax generally, that is tax on employees, and the payments by farmers cannot be distinguished from other such payments to enable any meaningful estimate to be made.

As regards the last part of the Deputy's question, it is estimated that, in real terms, the 1988 yield of £42 million from farmers' income tax represents about 34 per cent of the 1980 total receipts from income tax and agricultural rates from farmers, and about 50 per cent of the corresponding 1981 figure.
