Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sport Grants.

221.

asked the Minister for Education if she will specify the amount of individual Cospóir grants to be allocated by her Department; if she will list the grants by the sports involved, for example athletics, swimming, and other sports; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Grants are allocated by the Department of Education from national lottery funds under the following headings:

Annual Grants to National Governing Bodies of Sport:

Coaching, Equipment, Administration and Special Projects, Meetings of International Federations;

International Competition;

Development Officers (includes grants to a number of organisations which are not National Governing Bodies);

Out-standing Sportspersons;

Franco-Irish Sports Exchanges;

Special Initiatives in Deprived Areas;

Employment of Administrators;

Office Accommodation.

National lottery funds allocated to sport are expended in several other areas which do not involve direct grants to individual sports.

The compilation of the data required by the Deputy would require an inordinate amount of staff time which I do not propose to deploy at this time. If, however, the Deputy wishes to request specific details on a particular sport, I will arrange to supply same.

222.

asked the Minister for Education whether she will make funds available for the extension and development of at least one existing 25 metre swimming pool into a 50 metre pool, in order to provide the essential facilities for Irish swimmers who wish to compete in the Olympic Games in 1992; when such funds will be made available; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The National Sports Centre which is to be constructed at the Custom House Docks site in Dublin is to include a 50-metre swimming pool. There are no plans for the development of another such pool.
