Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remand Facilities for Young Persons.

26.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the remand facilities for young persons of both sexes in the State; if he has received any recent reports of difficulties in placing young people in custody in remand centres; if he has satisfied himself with the present situation; if he has any proposals to improve the facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware that difficulties of the nature mentioned by the Deputy have arisen in relation to the facilities for male young offenders aged over 16 years and young female offenders aged over 17 years, for the operation of which my Department has responsibility.

As regards young male offenders aged less than 16 years, St. Michaels at Finglas and Trinity House at Lusk are registered by the Minister for Justice for the purpose of Part V of the Children Act, 1908. Both of these places operate under the auspices of the Department of Education.

In the case of young female offenders aged less than 17 years, Cuan Mhuire at Whitehall, Dublin, is similarly registered and it too operates under the auspices of the Department of Education.

The Deputy will appreciate that it would not be a matter for me to comment on any difficulties arising in relation to facilities operated under the auspices of another Department.
