Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Identity Cards.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice when it is proposed to introduce identity cards to control the sale of alcohol to those who have not yet reached the legal drinking age.

Section 40 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1988 empowers the Minister for Justice to make regulations providing for the issue of age cards to persons aged 18 years or over, at their request, for the purposes of the Licensing Acts. The questions arising in this context include the bodies by which age cards would be issued, the fees to be charged, the information to be supplied by applicants, and the period of validity of the cards. Examination of these aspects is proceeding but I am not yet in a position to say when suitable regulations will be ready for my signature.
