Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Gibraltar Victims' Funeral.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice in relation to the funeral of the three persons shot at Gibraltar and in relation to information given by him to Dáil Éireann on 19 April 1988 to the effect that no direction was given at Garda Headquarters level in relation to the question of saluting at those funerals, if his attention has been drawn to a statement made by a Garda officer (details supplied) who said that there was a briefing conference in Dublin before the funerals and the instruction was given that if members of the Garda were not otherwise engaged they were to salute as the cortege passed; if this instruction was given at the level of Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner rank; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the newspaper report referring to this matter. The Garda authorities have confirmed that the information supplied by them, on which my reply to the parliamentary question on 19 April last was based, is correct — no directive issued at Garda Headquarters level in relation to saluting on the occasion of the funerals referred to.
