Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

82.

asked the Minister for Justice when all interviews are likely to be held following the recent Garda recruitment competition; if it is proposed to interview all of the candidates; when it is expected those interviewed and successful are likely to be called to the training centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Civil Service Commissioners, who are conducting the current Garda recruitment competition, that the interviewing of candidates who secure the highest placings in the recent written tests will commence in January next. It is not possible, at this stage, to indicate precisely the total number of candidates who will be interviewed as this will depend on the success rate of candidates at the interview and medical examination. However, it is intended that a sufficient number will be interviewed to provide for 1,000 appointments over the three year period 1989-1991.

The intention is that the first intake of trainees should be in April 1989, and that there should be a further intake every three months thereafter.
