asked the Minister for Defence the level of service pay paid to each rank in the Permanent Defence Force; if service pay is controlled by the terms of the Programme for National Recovery; if he has any plans to increase service pay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

, Limerick West): Service pay, as such, is not provided for in Defence Force regulations. Current rates of pay are as follows:

The rates of pay prescribed in column (6) above are increased by the following amounts:

£0.50 a week on completion of 15 years' service, and £1.00 a week on completion of 20 years' service.

Notes

(i) The rates of pay set out in the foregoing schedule are inclusive of Military Service Allowance at the following rates:

Officers (up to and including the rank of Captain) — £774 per annum.

Privates with 3 or more years' service or non-commissioned — £14.80 per week.

Privates with less than 3 years' service other than Privates, Grade I, Privates (Apprentice) or

Privates (Trainee Instrumentalist) — £5.36 per week.

(ii) There is provision for the issue of additional remuneration to personnel who hold certain qualifications or fill certain appointments.

The pay, allowances and conditions of personnel in the Permanent Defence Force are being examined at present by an Inter-Departmental Committee appointed by the Government.
