Vol. 384 No. 6

Written Answers. - Vehicle Type Approval.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the present position regarding the implementation in this country of European Commission directives on the approximation of the laws of member states relating to type approval of motor vehicles and their trailers: when and the extent to which he proposes to introduce regulations to give effect to EC Council Directive 87/385 of 25 June 1987; and the general effect of such regulations.

There are 84 EC Directives, including amending directives, concerning motor vehicle type approval. Effect has been given to virtually all these directives in Ireland. A statutory order designed to give effect to Directive 87/358 is in course of preparation and will be made shortly.

The general purpose of the directives is to ensure the approximation of the laws of the member states relating to the type approval of motor vehicles and ensure the free circulation of vehicles and components which satisfy the technical requirements set out in the directives.

The statutory regulations made here give effect to the directives so far as Ireland is concerned.
