Vol. 384 No. 6

Written Answers. - Country of Origin Labelling.

31.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the steps his Department take to see that honey which is produced outside the EC has its origin clearly indicated on the container.

There is no legal requirement to show origin on honey. Legislation requiring goods to carry an indication of country of origin has in the past been found by the European Court of Justice to be in breach of the Treaty of Rome. Even in the case of goods imported from non-EC countries the scope for requiring a statement of origin is extremely limited. I do not propose, therefore, to introduce an origin marking requirement in respect of honey.
