Vol. 384 No. 7

Written Answers. - Nuclear Power Stations.

25.

asked the Minister for Energy the representations he has made to the British authorities about the concerns of Irish people regarding future development of nuclear power stations in Britain; and, in particular, if he has made or prepared any submission to the public inquiry into the Hinkley Point C pressurised water reactor.

I have expressed to the UK Government on a number of occasions Ireland's opposition to an expansion of the UK nuclear industry which would increase potential risks of damage to this country. I met with and wrote to the Secretary of State for Energy making him aware of our concerns and urging, inter alia, that the utmost consideration be given to the objections to the proposed new plant at Hinkley Point when he is considering the report of the public inquiry. I decided that it would be unwise to become directly involved in the public inquiry into Hinkley Point C pressurised water reactor.
