Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - New Schools Planning.

79.

asked the Minister for Education having regard to the seven stages of planning process outlined by her in recent replies to Parliamentary Questions in relation to new schools namely (1) site report (2) outline sketch scheme (3) developed sketch scheme (4) working drawings (5) bills of quantities (6) seeking of tenders and (7) placing of contract (a) the steps which have been completed (b) the stage the project is at currently and (c) the progress which is expected in those stages by Easter 1989 in the case of (i) Jobstown community college, Tallaght, Dublin 24 (ii) Kilnamanagh/Kingswood second-level school, Tallaght, Dublin 24 and (iii) the regional technical college recommended for Tallaght by the Higher Education Authority in 1979.

In regard to items (i) Jobstown community college and (ii) Kilnamanagh second level school, I decided in January 1988 and June 1987 respectively that post-primary schools at these locations were not justified. Consequently, it was not necessary to initiate the planning process in these cases.

In regard to the proposed regional technical college, Tallaght, Stage 3 (developed sketch scheme) has been completed and the subject is currently at Stage 4 (working drawings). However, architectural planning of the college has been deferred pending the submission of a report by an interdepartmental committee which was established this year to examine the provision of third level places, and the rationalisation (including funding) of third level departments and institutions.
