Members are paid allowances for what are called unsocial hours, that is duty performed on Saturday, Sunday, Public Holidays and at night. These allowances with the exception of Saturday allowance are based on pay and are payable to ranks up to and including Inspector rank. They are as follows: (i) Double basic rate for Sunday duty. (ii) Double basic rate for duty on a Public Holiday which is a rostered working day. (iii) Double basic rate plus a free day for duty on a Public Holiday which is a rostered rest day. (iv) £5.05 special payment for a duty on a Saturday which is a rostered working day. (v) £5.05 plus the appropriate overtime compensation for duty on a Saturday which is a rostered rest day. (vi) Time-and-one quarter for night duty.

Allowances are also paid in respect of particular duties or in recoupment of expenses. Details of these are not readily available and could only be provided by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of time and effort. However, I would refer the Deputy to the State Directory which is published annually and which is available in the Library. This contains some details of allowances payable.

The rates of pay of the various ranks in the Garda Síochána are not linked to the pay of Civil Service grades.
