Vol. 385 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Storage of Carriage-Platform.

3.

asked the Taoiseach where the carriage-platform which was used by the late Daniel O'Connell is stored at present; if he is satisfied with the security for this carriage-platform and the heating arrangements regarding the storage of this carriage-platform; and if he will outline the type of accommodation where this carriage-platform is located at present.

The carriage-platform which was used by Daniel O'Connell is now stored in a coach-house in the National Museum's premises in Daingean, County Offaly. The coach-house is locked and there is no public access to the area save by permission of the Museum authorities. With regard to the question of heating, it is the relative humidity which is of significance and, in general, this is quite satisfactory.

Arrangements for the restoration of the carriage-platform are being made at present by the National Museum.

Would the Taoiseach agree that this carriage is probably unique in Europe? The problem with the humidity is that part of the crest of the four provinces on the door of the carriage is starting to decay. Will the Taoiseach give an assurance that he will make every possible effort to have the building renovated in such a way that the coach will not deteriorate further?

I will give the Deputy an assurance that I will look into it personally.

I would ask the Taoiseach to bear in mind that the carriage is in danger of deteriorating very rapidly.

The two of us might go for a spin in it.

I have never yet shared a platform with the Taoiseach.

Not even a shifting platform.

Who will do the driving?

Given the unsatisfactory arrangements for the storage of many of our priceless treasures at Daingean, if this carriage is restored where will it be put on display? Will it be sent back to the unsatisfactory realms of Daingean reformatory?

I have promised Deputy Enright that I will look into the whole matter personally to try to have some satisfactory arrangements made about it.

I beg the Chair's indulgence.

We have dealt adequately with this question.

Is the Taoiseach aware that the National Museum have made many efforts to improve Daingean? I should like him to give an assurance to the House that the carriage will be retained in Daingean, which will be upgraded to house it properly.

There is no display there.

There have been public displays in Daingean recently.
