asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the total value of vegetables imported into the country for each year from 1986 to 1988 inclusive; the varieties of vegetables which were imported; and the plans, if any, he has to encourage the production and marketing of vegetables in Ireland.
The particulars sought are set out in the following tables.
As regards my plans to encourage the production and marketing of vegetables in Ireland I would refer the Deputy to the Programme for the Development of Horticulture recently published by An Bord Glas. This sets out details of a five-year plan aimed at increasing sales of Irish fruit and vegetables on the home market and increasing exports of these products to a combined value of IR£58 million. Copies of the publication were sent to all Deputies and are also available in the Oireachtas library.
