Vol. 385 No. 6

Written Answers. - Toxic Chemical Removal.

183.

asked the Minister for the Marine if the purpose built land-based hatchery units approved by his Department which were referred to in his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 33 of 29 November 1988 will ensure the removal of all toxic chemicals from effluent discharges; and if he will make a statement regarding the possible danger to drinking water supplies.

Land based hatchery units are subject to control by my Department under the Fisheries Acts and by the relevant local authorities under the planning Acts. The units are not permitted in the first instance at locations where danger to drinking water supplies could arise. In relation to effluent, solids are required to be settled out whilst dissolved effluent is not permitted to exceed the assimilative capacity of the water body concerned; my Department prescribe stringent monitoring to this end.
