Vol. 385 No. 8

Written Answers - Rail Infrastructure.

14.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if, in anticipation of the Single European Market, he will indicate his Department's plans for investment in rail infrastructure with particular reference to linking the rail system to the major exit ports for passengers and freight.

Córas Iompair Éireann invest in rail infrastructure on an ongoing basis in order to provide extensive, safe and reliable services.

In the context of the Single European Market the board has identified a number of potential developments such as facilities for combined transport at the North Wall, Dublin, track and signalling developments at Waterford Port and a ship/rail/road interchange facility at Dún Laoghaire. These are additional to developments at Rosslare, which are dealt with in a separate question. When the detailed proposals are submitted to my Department, they will be examined as quickly as possible, taking account of the possibility of their qualifying for assistance from EC Structural Funds.
