Vol. 385 No. 8

Written Answers - SFADCo's Tourism Role.

16.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will outline SFADCo's role in tourism promotion; the budget which is available for north Tipperary and each of the counties that make up the region as a whole; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 1 January 1988 SFADCo's assumed responsiblity for the tourism functions in the mid-west previously carried out by the Shannonside Regional Tourism Organisation. This involves the development of the tourism product in the region and the promotion of the region in the domestic market.

SFADCo's 1988 estimate provision included a sum of £250,000 specifically to enable them to discharge their tourism functions in the mid-west. This sum is augmented by contributions from the industry and local authorities and by revenue generated from commercial activities such as sales of literature. The apportionment of the budget between the various countries is a matter for SFADCo, having regard to the industry's needs and market demand.
