While acknowledging the deservedly high reputation of our medical schools, I am concerned that our medical students should receive an education which equips them to provide services which the community requires. A concern to promote better links between medical education and national health policies was shared by those, including myself, who participated last November in a World Health Organisation Ministerial Consultation on the subject. I have drawn the results of that consultation to the attention of the medical education authorities and of the Medical Council, which has statutory functions in that regard.
