Vol. 386 No. 4

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Systems.

69.

asked the Minister for Communications if he has satisfied himself that the MMDS system for rural television viewers is still the most satisfactory; and, if so, the reason the progress which was promised two years ago with regard to its installation and operation has not taken place.

I am satisfied that MMDS is the only real option for viewers in non-cabled areas to get an acceptable range of viewing choice including the proposed third television channel. I announced my intention to introduce MMDS in February 1988. Since the closing date for receipt of completed applications for licences, 31 August 1988, my Department have been examining the 42 applications received. I expect to begin issuing licences shortly.
