Vol. 386 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grants Applications for Marinas.

37.

asked the Minister for the Marine the number of applications for grants for marinas which have been received in his Department; and (i) the proposed location of each (ii) the percentage grant proposed in each case and (iii) the number which has been approved to date.

From time to time there have been inquiries to my Department regarding the availability of grants for the construction of marinas. Unfortunately my Department does not have moneys to grant-aid marina projects.

I am very anxious to see further development of marinas around the Irish coast and I am therefore pursuing a policy of encouraging the development of marinas so that they can contribute fully to the tourism and leisure facilities in Ireland. My Department will facilitate private investment in marinas and encourage suitable development plans. Unfortunately, foreseeable financial constraints will prevent the Department from engaging in direct construction of such facilities. Its support will however hopefully result in the construction of a number of marina facilities.
