Vol. 386 No. 5

Written Answers. - Naas, Kildare Sports Centre Project.

70.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the allocation of funds from the national lottery towards the provision of recreational facilities at Caragh Road complex, Naas, County Kildare; the total amount of funds available and already approved for this project; the specific amenities within the project to which the allocation will be given; if she will indicate the planning and-or administrative processes still to be proceeded with prior to actual payment of the moneys involved; the estimated duration of the remaining planning and administrative processes in order that the organisers could schedule and implement their proposals; the extent to which the works involved will receive funding in the current year; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I can confirm that Naas has been designated as a location for the provision of a local sports centre with agreement in principle for maximum capital funding of £300,000 or 70 per cent of the approved cost of the project whichever is the lesser. Outline proposals for the project have been received from the local sponsors but it would not be possible at this stage to outline a timescale for the remaining planning stages or when building work will commence.

As soon as it is in a position to give specific sanction to the sponsors my Department will require detailed preplanning and a competitive tendering procedure to apply to the project.

As with all capital projects payment of the grant would be made in instalments as building work proceeds but only after approval has issued from my Department for the initiation of planning, invitation of tenders and for the acceptance of a particular tender.
