asked the Minister for Energy the Government's position regarding the proposal to build a second nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset; whether the Irish Government are concerned about the possible environmental effects of such a plant; if the Government are satisfied with the processes and systems for waste disposal; and his views regarding this proposal in so far as it is likely to affect the quality of the Irish environment without reference to the energy implications of such a proposal.
Written Answers. - Proposed UK Nuclear Plant.
The Government are opposed to any expansion of the UK nuclear industry because it increases the risk of damage to this country. This opposition extends to all aspects of the nuclear industry whether existing plant or planned additional plant. As I have already stated the UK Government have been urged by us to give utmost consideration to the objections to the proposed new plant at Hinkley Point.
