Mr. Shatter

asked the Minister for the Environment the staff who are employed in the local government audit service who are qualified to carry out audits of local authority accounts; and the number of qualified persons who were employed to undertake the aforesaid work in each of the years 1979 to 1988 inclusive, by his Department.

asked the Minister for the Environment, in respect of each local authority in the State, when the accounts of each such local authority were last audited; and the financial year in respect of which the last audit was carried out in respect of each of the aforesaid local authorities.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 103 and 104 together.

The number of qualified staff serving in the local government audit service on 1 February 1989 was 34. Following are the numbers of qualified staff serving at 1 January in each of the years 1979 to 1988 inclusive: 1979, 35; 1980, 36; 1981, 38; 1982, 36; 1983, 37; 1984, 36; 1985, 36; 1986, 37; 1987, 36; 1988, 35.

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to completed audits is set out in the following tabular statement in respect of each elective local authority.
