Vol. 387 No. 1

Written Answers. - Alleged Post Office Van Robbery.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice if a post office van was robbed on 9 September 1988 at Cooksborough, Mullingar, County Westmeath; the amount which was taken; the arrests, if any, which have been made in connection with this robbery; when the investigation into this matter will be finalised; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not the practice for the Minister for Justice to give detailed information to the House about specific crimes or individual Garda investigations except in singular instances where the circumstances of an investigation are so exceptional that such a course is deemed to be appropriate. I do not propose to make any statement in this case other than to say that I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the robbery referred to did take place and that it is the subject of an ongoing Garda investigation.

It is, of course, open to any person with a bona fide interest in a particular case to write to the Garda Síochána and ask for information privately.
