Vol. 387 No. 1

Written Answers. - Compensation Claim.

113.

asked the Minister for Health the reason for the delay in responding to a claim for compensation for a person (details supplied) in County Galway who suffered mental and physical retardation administration of the three-in-one injection.

I would like to explain to the Deputy that persons, who it was claimed, were permanently damaged by whooping cough vaccination were examined by the independent Expert Medical Group on Whooping Cough Vaccination which is composed of three medical experts.

The expert group examined the person and all the relevant medical records on the case and consulted those doctors, including the family doctor, who had a knowledge of this case, before making its decision. Having carried out this comprehensive examination the group concluded that the person's disability was not caused by whooping cough vaccination. There is therefore no basis for a claim for compensation in this case. I would refer the Deputy to his previous Parliamentary Question of 25 February 1986 and to my letter of 7 January 1988.
