Vol. 387 No. 4

Written Answers. - Army Security Escorts.

128.

asked the Minister for Defence the cost to his Department for the year ended 31 December 1988 of Army personnel providing escorts for security companies transporting cash; and the amount of finance recouped by his Department from the companies and financial institutions benefiting from such services.

Limerick West): Pursuant to their role of rendering aid to the civil power, the Defence Forces give assistance to the Garda Síochána in potecting movements of cash. The estimated additional costs (excluding pay) in respect of the Defence Forces of providing such assistance for the year ended 31 December 1988 was £1,379,000.

Since the Defence Forces act in aid of the Garda Síochána in this situation the question of the recovery of costs is not a matter for my Department.
