Vol. 387 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Cork School Caretaker.

129.

asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint a caretaker to Scoil Náisiúnta Cholmcille (Buachaillí), Douglas, County Cork, which position has been vacant since September 1988; and if her attention has been drawn to the almost daily deterioration of the school and its environs as such an appointment has not been made.

As the Deputy will be aware, the previous Government took a decision in 1982 to phase out the scheme for the employment of caretakers in national schools due to the deterioration in the state of the public finances.

This phasing out is continuing and it is therefore not open to my Department to approve the appointment of a replacement where a position falls vacant.
